To make the students productive and holistic members of the society, the use of various kinds of educational and physical aids and adaptive devices, educational visits and outdoor trips are required.
Hence donations in cash or in kind will go a long way in the betterment of the life of a student.

A wide section of special adults, due to impoverished conditions, were unable to pursue fundamental education and, as a result, have been deprived of any kind of formal training. The “Sponsor A Student” programme gives you a chance to make a difference by adopting the annual tutoring of a student. As a sponsor one would be in touch with the overall progress of the student by means of an Annual Progress Report, as well as through optional monthly interaction sessions with the student.

Corporates may also make donations and avail of CSR benefits, queries for which can always be directed towards Mann.

All donations are exempt under Section 80-G of the Income Tax Act.


As part of our vocational training and employment program, our students make and sell our unique ‘Mann-Made” line of handmade products. Most of the products are made using recycled materials that have been redesigned and re-purposed so that each item is unique and environmentally friendly. 70% of the proceeds of the sales are given to the students as their monthly stipend. Hence, these sales are always helping the students to earn a living and to become contributing members of society.


Your Traits

As a volunteer, one might or might not have some experience working with individuals with special needs, however the qualities that are truly imperative include enthusiasm, imagination, commitment and energy! It would be beneficial to both, the Mann students as well as the volunteer if the latter could commit to at least three months of volunteering, however, more importantly, he/she must be flexible to work with others in a variety of circumstances and must be able to work with a diverse set of individuals/groups.

Your Role

As a volunteer, one would be expected to:

  • facilitate classroom activities and organize material under the direction of the supervising teacher
  • provide instruction to and monitor (under the supervision of a teacher) the students in a variety of individual/group settings
  • assist with loading and unloading students on the bus and with transporting them in and around school/on field trips
  • assist with pre-lunch and lunch activities
  • perform clerical tasks (making photocopies, filing etc.) to help the teacher get instructional material ready

By becoming a part of the Mann Family as a volunteer, one would be aiding the holistic development of intellectually disabled individuals, by largely helping to improve their self-image and self-esteem. The eventual outcome towards which the volunteer will be contributing, in whichever capacity, is paving the path for a bright future for these special adults and helping them live lives of dignity.

Why should you employ a special adult?

Among the various reasons are:

  • Adults with special needs are dependable employees who are more likely to stay on the job.
  • To tap an unexplored resource house of skill and talent.
  • To strengthen the quality of teamwork within your workplace/organization.
  • To contribute towards building a more inclusive community.
What tasks can a special adult perform?

We, at Mann, train and prepare our students for tasks* extremely specific to the nature of the employer’s workplace and requirement.

Examples of typical tasks that special adults can perform efficiently are:

  • Working at copy centres or performing clerical tasks
  • Working at packing facilities
  • Product assembly
  • Cleaning and cutting in the kitchen
  • Working with arts and crafts material
  • Classroom aides

* The list of tasks will be pre-decided and agreed upon by both the employer and the Mann student along with his/her representative.

Who should (especially) employ a special adult?

Firstly, it certainly does take an empathetic individual/organization to hire an individual with special needs, who is willing and enthusiastic to consider their part in helping the special adult earn an income for his/her family, and in making a special adult independent on the whole.

Moreover, the kind of contribution to a workplace that a student of Mann is well-equipped to provide may be availed of greatly by those in the need of operational duties to be performed. Local stores and small businesses, for instance, may find a special adult extremely helpful in carrying out tasks such as folding boxes, putting labels and even in building up the general morale and spirit of a workplace!

When should you employ a special adult?

With respect to the employer/business, a special adult may be employed anytime after the work process has, more or less, been defined and when there are quantifiable tasks identified to be given to a special individual.

On the other hand, a student of Mann is usually deemed “ready to work” only if he/she fits into a relatively mild category of disability and only once he/she has undergone a certain period of generalized vocational training.

How should you employ a special adult?

Once the Employment Cell has been contacted, it creates a partnership between local businesses/employers and the Mann family. Next, the vocational services offered by the students of Mann may be put to use in one of the following ways:

  • By directly employing the student(s) at a shop/office/restaurant etc. wherein task-specific training will be given to the students by the Mann trainers.
  • By giving orders to the Employment Cell for manufacturing products from the “Mann-Made” line as well as for other made-to-order products on request.
